On weekends I wake up early to take care of the animals at the ranch. This morning, L came with me, which was good, so then I could capture on video the amazing chicken run. What they are racing toward are the feed pans I fill with organic chicken feed. While in the coop, they watch me fill them, so know what’s going on. Then, I open the door (cue ominous music now). After they eat, they will lay up to two eggs during the day. I feel bad saying chickens aren’t smart. But they really, really aren’t. Alas, we taught them everything they know, so we have only ourselves to blame.
After showering, we eat yummy things we get at the farmer’s market, like these candied figs with goat cheese and balsamic reduction. L ate the whole plate. (I had a couple)

After naps, it becomes sunset. And warm nights in the Bay Area, which are rare because of the rolling fog, make the sky amazing. The (San Francisco) city lights are way, way in the background!

Would that every day could be like this…I might not even remember I have tooth pain.

Today was the best day ever and it’s not even noon yet! I love the ranch. Now we’re heading to Little Farm at Tilden to see the new piglets. I can’t wait!
PS–When M says “candied figs” she means she caramelized them in butter. I still haven’t had sugar in about five years.

Leah, you haven’t had sugar for five years? Wow.
(Hi Melissa.)

A chicken stampede! Awesome.
M, I’m so sorry about your tooth. I know how hard it is to think about anything else when your tooth hurts. What is keeping you from treatment, again??
And L, I have to applaud your discipline. We’ve cut out a lot of stuff but not sugar! Well, some sugar, but not all of it.

Sometimes I let L smell the cakes I am eating. Sometimes it deters her (if it’s like, a safeway cake..yes, GUILTY!) but sometimes, if it’s a wamr choc chip cookie she considers eating it, then I have to remind her of the house of cards in which sugar lives…
As for my tooth Angie – it’s just healing so, so slowly from the crown procedure. I have confidence it will heal completely since it has felt better in tiny bits each day. But you know, sometimes people have sensitive teeth and trauma to the tooth is a tough one to heal! Espesh because I grind at night!!!!

Oh, good, I’m glad you’re on the mend. I was hoping you weren’t avoiding the dentist for some reason. I can’t keep track of all this stuff.
I had a crown last year and it’s still sensitive every now and then. When the root was dying, over the course of a very long Sunday, I thought I might kill someone. I will go on record and say that tooth pain is worse than labor pain.

HA! A feather stampede. They are literally jumping for joy over their organic meal. You look so happy too. Yay! and those FIGS!

I am pretty happy when I am there. As a matter of fact, I’m so content I don’t even think about it. Now that’s pretty happy.

That was a great summary of a great day on the farm. btw I love reading your blog…farm girls are rare 0_o…I agree with that statement about chickens being less than brilliant, we did teach them everything we know. Kind of explains our public education system as well, don’t you think? ^_^ haha
