The only thing I like about the fourth of July is that everything is closed (except the bookstore where L works) and everyone has the day off (except L) and you have free reign to have an extremely slothful picnic and eat a cajillion pounds of random food. It doesn’t matter to me that I personally am neither having sloth nor picnic; what I love is not having to go to the office job.
I do have to go to the farm, however, and milk the goat twice (morning and evening), harvest the eggs, and do the night feeding. But I don’t care; I love that “work.”
Especially when I get the spoils of it: this egg, which normally I would not have taken because we sell them, accidentally broke when I was putting it in the basket to bring it in. Oops, have to eat it. Now, four hours from chicken to my stomach - that’s farm fresh.
I also got a half gallon of milk from Ali Oop, the milking goat we have for the summer. This I do get to keep because we can’t sell it as we have no milking station that’s been USDA or whatever association-approved. So, on Sunday, watch out: I will be making my first batch of goat cheese! Right now, the jug is in the fridge, awaiting processing. I’ll be using this simple recipe.
So what are YOU doing on this fun July 4 weekend? Hmmm?

What did I do Fourth of July? City-fun: Went out dancing with my cousin, Gigi, and great pal, Coral–”Curve” Magazine held Peach Party events around town–lots of fun!
Your farm-stories are delightful, though!
